Sony Xperia Z3 and SmartWatch 3 launched at IFA

Sony has annouced its new flagship smartphone the Xperia Z3 at the IFA technology conference in Berlin, alongside an updated version of its Android Wear SmartWatch the SmartWatch 3.
Details of the dual launch were leaked to 9to5Google over the weekend, confirming the Z3 will feature a 5.2-inch ‘triluminos’ display, providing brighter images and a better contrast ratio than Sony’s Z2 predecessor.
The Xperia Z3 sports a 2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor and 3GB of RAM, and will come with special software designed to extend battery life.
Sony also unveiled a third generation of its SmartWatch, running the recently-released Android Wear operating system, tailored for wearable devices.
The SmartWatch 3 features a 1.68-inch 320 x 320 display and will look very similar to Samsung’s Gear 2 Neo in terms of design.
Other devices include a ‘Compact’ version of the Z3 with a 4.7-inch display, a lower-cost Xperia E3 smartphone with a 1.2Ghz quad-core processor and 4.8-inch display, and an extremely thin 8-inch tablet, called the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact.
Finally, Sony updated its health-driven SmartBand line introduced earlier this year with Bluetooth connectivity with the SmartBand Talk, complete with curved e-ink display.
The news comes ahead of the expected launch of Apple’s latest iPhone next week, as well as a rumoured ‘iWatch’, which analysts say could give the wearable computing industry a much needed boost.
The wearable technology market is expected to be worth $30 billion ($18bn) by 2018, according to analyst firm IDC.
