TORONTO:The province’s Special Investigations Unit has been called to investigate after a man was shot near the intersection of Peter and Adelaide streets early Saturday morning.
Toronto paramedics said a man was taken to a hospital trauma centre with life-threatening injuries sometime after 3:04 a.m. Saturday. The SIU wrote in a tweet that a man suffered a gunshot wound after an interaction with Toronto police Saturday morning.
Mirage Imani told reporters he heard shots from his home on the 30th floor of a nearby building at about 3:30 a.m. Saturday. He thought they were fireworks at first, and went to look at Peter Street below from his balcony.Using binoculars, he said he saw a Beck taxi van surrounded by police cruisers, with a bicycle lying on the road next to the taxi.
He said he saw police holding a man down behind the taxicab, possibly performing CPR. He also saw a car with about eight bullet holes in and around its windshield.
Witnesses in the area tell reporters they heard a rapid series of what sounded like gunshots from an automatic weapon, followed by more shots.
“The gunshots were very close together,” Imani said.
Toronto police declined to comment, citing the involvement of the SIU.
The SIU is called in to investigate any incident involving police where someone is seriously injured, killed, or allegations of sexual assault have been made.
