New Delhi, Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar feels Ravi Shastri is the favourite to become the head coach of the Indian cricket team.
Shastri has become the front-runner for the high-profile job after he formally submitted his application to the BCCI.
“Ravi actually was the one (during his tenure as the team director) the turnaround actually started for the Indian cricket team back in 2014,” Gavaskar said. “After India lost in England, BCCI asked him to come in as a team director… Suddenly there was a change in the team’s fortunes over a period of time. Now that he’s applied, he’s probably the man who is going to get the job,” Gavaskar said.
Shastri, who served as Indian team director from August 2014 to June 2016, shares a healthy rapport with the players including captain Virat Kohli.
During his tenure, India won limited-overs away series against England in 2014, reached the semifinals of the World Cup and World T20 (2015 and 2016, respectively), won away Test series against Sri Lanka, home series against South Africa and T20 away series against Australia.
The others who have applied for the head coach role are Virender Sehwag, Tom Moody, Venkatesh Prasad, Richard Pybus, Dodda Ganesh, Lalchand Rajput and Phil Simmons.
BCCI likely to appoint professional managers
BCCI is likely to appoint professional managers for the Indian team. It is believed that the board will come out with the advertisement in a week or two.
As per a BCCI source, the board wishes to get rid of this formula of pleasing members of the state associations who are sent for the tours as managers with the team.
It is reported that the Committee of Administrators (CoA) is not happy with the practice of existing BCCI officials touring and giving reports. The development comes after the recent controversy surrounding Anil Kumble’s exit wherein it was reported that the team manager, in his report of the Champions Trophy, made no mention of the rift between the former coach and skipper Virat Kohli.
‘Didn’t see much interaction between Kumble-Kohli’
Kapil Malhotra, who was India’s team manager for the Champions Trophy, has made a startling revelation, saying that he did not see much interaction between skipper Virat Kohli and former coach Anil Kumble during the tournament.
“I did not see much communication between the coach and the captain. Personally, I did not witness any arguments between the two,” Malhotra said in his report submitted to BCCI. “Initially when I met Anil Kumble I found him to be slightly reserved, but as the tournament progressed I found him more approachable,” he added.
The BCCI has already stated that the team will get its new head coach before their tour to Sri Lanka beginning July 26.
