SGPC chief Makkar flays clean chit to Tytler

Amritsar, The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has flayed the clean chit given by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to Congress leader Jagdish Tytler in a 1984 riots case.

In a statement issued here on Wednesday, SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar said, “Sikhs the world over were extremely saddened by this as the community was pinning its hopes on the premier investigating agency for justice.”

He termed the CBI’s decision as one-sided, adding that this was not expected from an agency that was believed to be impartial and powerful. “But this clearly shows that even the CBI is not free from the influence of governments,” the SGPC chief said without making a reference to any particular government or political party which may have pressurised the CBI into giving the clean chit to the Congress leader.

“It is unfortunate that the CBI has arrived at this decision despite a large number of Sikhs and witnesses having clearly stated that Tytler had a hand in the riots,” he said.

“Though we have been let down by the CBI, we will continue our fight for justice,” Makkar added.
