Senior akali leader & former Mp Gurcharan Singh Galib passes away

Ludhiana,  Senior Akali leader and former MP Mr Gurcharan Singh Galib (82) passed away after a brief illness today. He was undergoing treatment at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, here, since October 13, 2014 and it was around 7 am today that he breathed his last.
After his sudden demise, Chief Minister Mr Parkash Singh Badal visited his house in Barewal area today afternoon. He was accompanied by Cabinet Minister Mr Sharanjit Singh Dhillon, besides several other political leaders and government officials.

While speaking to the media persons, the Chief Minister said that Mr Gurcharan Singh Galib was a balanced and an experienced leader, who was a true champion of Punjab, Punjabi and Punjabiat. Sharing his heartfelt sympathies with the members of the bereaved family, Mr. Badal prayed to the Almighty to grant eternal peace to the departed soul and give strength and courage to the family members, relatives and friends to bear this irreparable loss.

Mr Gurcharan Singh Galib was born in the house of Sardar Joginder Singh and Smt. Gurnam Kaur at Galib Kalan village of Ludhiana district on December 1, 1932. He did his B.A. from SCD Government College, Ludhiana. In the year 1964, he became President, Panchayat Samiti, Sidhwan Bet, and in 1967, he was elected as an MLA from Jagraon constituency. In 1990, he became President, District Congress Committee Ludhiana and in year 1992 and 1999, he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Ludhiana on a Congress ticket. Mr Galib joined Shiromani Akali Dal in 2009 and at present, he was the vice president and member of Political Affairs Committee of Shiromani Akali Dal.

He is survived by wife Mrs Amarjeet Kaur, son Mr Karanjit Singh Galib, three daughters- Ms Manjeeta Kaur, Ms Karamjit Kaur and Ms Gurpreet Kaur. His cremation would take place at his ancestral Galib Kalan village at 12 noon tomorrow.

Prominent among those who visited Mr Galib’s residence today included MLA’s Mr Prem Mittal, Bharat Bhushan Ashu, Mr Darshan Singh Shivalik, Mr S R Kler, former MP Mr Amrik Singh Aliwal, SAD District presidents Mr Madan Lal Bagga and Mr Harbhajan Singh Dang, Senior Akali leader Mr Harvir Singh Ayali, councillors Mr Bhupinder Singh Bhinda, Mr Balkar Singh Sandhu, Mr Sanjay Talwar, Congress leader Mr Ishwarjot Singh Cheema, besides several others.
