OTTAWA – The Minister of Science and Innovation is expected to name the next Canadian astronaut to visit the International Space Station at a news conference Monday morning.
A spokesman for Navdeep Bains said in an email to The Canadian Press that the next Canadian astronaut in space would be at the news conference.
Last year, then-industry minister James Moore announced that two Canadian astronauts would be going to the space station by 2024 — one by 2019 and one by 2024 — but he didn’t say who would be first.
The options are Jeremy Hansen, 40, and David Saint-Jacques, 46, the only active members of the Canadian Astronaut Corps.
In an interview in 2014, Hansen said he had an inkling he’d get to space by 2020.
Chris Hadfield, who was commander of the ISS in 2013, was the most recent Canadian in space.
