Chandigarh, The Leader of the Opposition and the Punjab Congress Legislature Party chief Mr Charanjit Singh Channi today urged the chief minister of Punjab Mr Parkash Singh Badal to protect the interests of Punjab at every level in view of the status quo ordered by the Supreme Court on the SYL Canal on the petition filed by Haryana. Badal should fight the case in true spirit pleading it in the Supreme Court with the best available legal experts of the country. Earlier also the Punjab government led by Mr Badal did not defend the SYL case in Supreme Court seriously that’s why the Punjab is suffering till today. The land could be de notified via notification also but intentionally to befool the people of Punjab the bill was brought by the ruling party in Vidhan Sabha.
Channi said that the Punjab assembly had unanimously passed the bill and the congress party will not let any single drop of water to go out of the state. Now it is the conscious of the chief minister of Punjab whether to continue this alliance with the BJP at the center or not. Mr Badal should also withdraw her daughter in law Smt Harsimrat Kaur Badal from the Modi cabinet as a matter of protest because the BJP government in Haryana is pushing the case against the Punjab. Channi also questioned the silence of the Punjab BJP on this SYL matter when their government in Haryana is opposing the Punjab’s move. The people of Punjab are eagerly watching and will give them a befitting reply in the coming vidhan sabha elections. He asserted it was a project that was defunct as its construction had stopped in 1990 and the canal had been crumbling over the years. He said practically, it was shelved years ago that could not be restarted and would never be completed.
Channi also called upon the Chief Minister Mr Parkash Singh Badal and Deputy Chief Minister Mr Sukhbir Singh Badal to clarify their relationship with Indian National Lok Dal Supremo Mr Om Parkash Chautala and his family in view of the ruckus created by Mr Abhay Chautala and his party MLAs on the issue of SYL Canal bill.
Mr Channi said it was shocking that the INLD legislators led by Mr Chautala stormed Punjab Assembly to register their protest against the legislation to de-notify SYL Canal. He pointed out this had never happened earlier although the Assembly complex is shared by the two states from the very beginning. This clearly proves the strong relationship between the two families where in if the congress party brings any innocent victim in Vidhan Sabha they are served with privilege motion why not today the privilege is brought against the Leader of the house S Parkash Singh Badal.
He said Badal and Chautala families have strong social links and Mr Abhay Chautala’s statement announcing to end all relations was nothing but a drama as he himself was close to Mr Sukhbir Badal. He said the Badals must respond publicly on this issue. Both the families are securing and safe guarding their political interests wherever they can.
