Sangrur, The ruling SAD-BJP combine has managed to clinch the president’s post in Dhuri municipal committee (MC), but the BJP is sulking.
The Akalis, with only one candidate on its party symbol, gathered support of a majority of the Independents, while three BJP candidates fought the MC polls on their symbol.
On Tuesday, independent candidate Purshotam Lal was elected to the MC president’s post. But the Akalis, in order to appease the Independents, proposed to elect four vice-presidents instead of a senior vice-president.
The four would have included Meena Rani of the BJP as well, but the saffron party didn’t agree.
“We will (only) take the post of senior vice president as we have won three seats on party symbol, against one of the SAD,” said the saffron party’s Dhuri unit chief, Vikas Jain.
“We will not support the president until we get the post of senior vice-president.”
How things between the alliance partners will turn up is not known, but for now, the sub-divisional magistrate Amit Bhambi has refused to admit the Akali’s demand.
“I have taken up the matter with the government… but president Purshotam Lal was appointed unanimously,” Bhambi added.
Meanwhile, in Sangrur municipal committee, the SAD has appointed Rajinder Singh Ripu as president while Sarjeevan Jindal of the BJP has been made senior vice-president.
Ripu won from ward number 27, whereas Jindal emerged victorious from ward number 20.
In Amargarh Nagar panchayat, where the SAD-BJP had won with absolute majority, Manjinder Singh Bawa of the SAD has been appointed as president and PG Singla of the BJP was made vice-president.
