Amid Ukraine-Russia tensions, Moscow has threatened to deploy nuclear missiles in Europe. Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister warned that Moscow may deploy intermediate range nuclear missiles in Europe.
Moscow said it would deploy the nuclear missiles if NATO’s refused to engage with it to prevent escalation. Russia said there were ‘indirect indications’ that NATO was moving closer to re-deploying INF.
A 1987 treaty between the US and Soviet Union had barred the deployment of such weapons in Europe. The treaty was signed between Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and US President Ronald Reagan. However, in 2019, the Donald Trump administration withdrew from the pact, saying Russia had violated it for years.
