CHANDIGARH, December 25: Punjab Congress today rubbished the charges levelled by the maverick politician Sukhpal Singh Khaira saying his resigning and joining the Aam Aadmi Party was a good riddance for the party.
The party wondered as how come Khaira had started seeing all faults with the Congress leadership including the PCC president as only on December 1, he (Khaira) had issued a statement hailing Capt Amarinder’s appointment as the PCC president and saying it will mark the beginning of the end for the Akalis.
In a statement issued here today, senior vice president of the Punjab Congress Mr Laal Singh said, people like Khaira, can never be happy and comfortable with any political party. He pointed out, it is his third party having started from Akali Dal, then joined the Congress and now he has joined the AAP.
Mr Singh said, he will also be suing Khaira for defamation for levelling baseless charges, as he had been acquitted by the Supreme Court of India.
“Khaira is an outright opportunist whose ambition is disproportionate to his capabilities and standing”, Laal Singh said, adding, “his only claim to fame is shooting out statements more for personal publicity than for any good”.
He pointed out, had he any real standing, he would not have been defeated thrice. “After all, a leader’s standing is judged at the time of polls and Khaira has a hat-trick of rejections only and fourth defeat will be added in 2017”, he asserted.
The PCC senior vice president said, on December 1, he issued a statement thereby lauding Capt Amarinder’s appointment. He quoted Khaira as having said only three weeks ago that, “his (Captain’s) appointment has also sent shivers down the spine of the current ruling dispensation of the state. Known as a decisive leader, people expect Capt Amarinder Singh to put Punjab back to its glorious past, reputation wrecked by the Badal family”.
He said, in the same statement Khaira had added, “the elevation of Captain Amarinder Singh has marked the beginning of the end of the unjust, authoritarian and dictatorial rule of the Badal clan. The people of Punjab are very sure that Captain Amarinder Singh and his team will help liberate Punjab from the corrupt, autocratic and draconian Badal government. Here, I warmly welcome the appointment of Capt Amarinder Singh as the President PPCC”.
Hitting back at Khaira Laal Singh pointed out, his father, Sukhjinder Singh who was a minster who had been sacked for corruption. Besides, he added, he was the person who had raised Khalistan flag in Kapurthala.
Ridiculing Khaira for taking high moral stand, the senior PCC vice president pointed out, his reputation was that of a land grabber. He said, even the house he is living in Chandigarh belonged to the father of a popular film actress and he had forcibly occupied it.
Laal Singh also took a dig at Khaira’s claims that he was offered National Spokespersonship of the AICC. He said, Khaira was simply claiming it to bargain for some position in the AAP as there was no such proposal.
