Chandigarh, July 6: Strongly condemning the police repression against the peacefully protesting teachers in Bathinda, the Punjab Pradesh Congress President Mr Partap Singh Bajwa today said it exposed the brutal face of the state government headed by Mr Parkash singh Badal.

“It is the democratic right of every section of society to stage peaceful agitations seeking end to injustice and airing grievances. The EGS and AIESTR teachers have been agitating for long for the acceptance of their demands but the government has adopted totally indifferent attitude. Instead of taking steps to accept their demands, the only solution with the Badal government is to unleash police lathis on peacefully agitating men and women”, he said.

Mr Bajwa said the police people were so merciless that several teachers, including a woman, jumped into the canal to save themselves from the police fury. Such an attitude was just unacceptable. What was all the more reprehensible that the teachers who tried to take shelter in nearby houses and shops were dragged out and beaten up by the police.

The PPCC chief lambasted Mr Badal and his government for any vision for the state otherwise how could one justify a meagre salary of Rs 5000 per month while 7000 teachers recruited on a two year contract faced uncertain future as their contract was about the end.

He asserted it was the responsibility of the state government to evolve long term policies rather than resorting to ad hoc measures. However, the long only term policy in operation was as to how to loot the state by twisting government policies, he added.

Extending total support to various sections of the agitating government employees, he assured them that the Congress would take care of all their problems after forming the government in 2017 as the Badal government had failed the people on every front.
