New Delhi: If there is one player to dial for runs and big scores at the moment it is Brendon McCullum. The New Zealand skipper continued his prime form this year as he showed powerful brutality against visiting Sri Lanka on Day 1 of the first Test match in Christchurch on Friday.
McCullum smashed 195 off just 134 deliveries and missed out on breaking the record for fastest double ton. The Kiwi sensation on Friday hit 11 sixes and overcame the likes of Kevin Pietersen, Matthew Hayden, Brian Lara and Virender Sehwag to become the fourth highest sixes hit in Test cricket (92). Former Aussie legend Adam Gilchrist leads the list with 100.
He has also hit 30 sixes in the calendar year which is the most by a batsman in Test cricket history.
His 74-ball ton was the fastest Test 100 scored by a New Zealand batsman. McCullum also became the first New Zealand batsman to score 1,000 test runs in a calendar year.
The Kiwi skipper is having a great time in Test cricket with the bat and scored a match winning 202 earlier against Pakistan in November. This was his successive Test ton.
McCullum has given a new identity to power hitting and with a stupendous average of over 70 runs this year, he has handed the Kiwis an onus on winning Test matches.
This was a perfect Boxing Day present to all the fans in Christchurch and across the world. McCullum will hope to continue in the same vein in 2015 and with the form he is in, it looks set for him to have another special year.
