CHANDIGARH, October 27: Senior Congress leader and Kapurthala MLA Rana Gurjeet Singh today asked the newly appointed Director General of Police Suresh Arora to end the Akali halqa incharge interference in the police department which has completely politicised the police functioning.
He said, this will not only help in restoring public confidence in police, but will also improve its functioning. “The moment the MLA and halqa incharge interference in police functioning is ended the result will be obvious and visible within one month and people will start having faith in the police which is lacking right now”, he observed.
In a statement issued here today, Rana while appreciating the new DGP’s emphasis on greater police-public interaction, said, as long as the SHOs and the area DSPs report to the Akali MLAs and halqa incharge instead of the SSPs, there will be no change in the functioning of the police and public opinion about it and the law and order will continue to get a hit.
The Congress leader maintained that the new police chief must be already aware as how the Akali-BJP government has subverted the police system by making the DSPs and SHOs accountable to the MLAs and halqa incharge and not the SSP. “In fact it is the MLA and halqa incharge who gets the SHOs and DSPs posted in his area and the SSPs have virtually no say”, he said.
The senior Congress leader said that most of the SHOs and area DSPs end up acting more like Akali jathedars than police professionals, which has adversely affected the law and order. He said, if the police image and credibility has touched all time low today, it is because of this system introduced by the Akali-BJP government to appease its MLAs and defeated leaders.
