Punjab to provide free training to budding players in 10 sports academies

* Sports department announces selection trails for admission
* Players to get Rs. 5500 per month for food and Rs. 10,000 for sports kit

Chandigarh, With a view to achieve dominance in sports Punjab has chalked out a plan to provide free training, food, medical and transport facilities to budding players by admitting them in sports academies under speed fund scheme.

Disclosing this here today a spokesman of sports department said that Punjab Deputy Chief Minister, who also holds sports portfolio, has set the target for maximum participation of players from Punjab State in the Indian contingent for Olympic Games scheduled to be held at Rio in 2016 and asked the sports department to provide training to players free of cost by admitting them for session 2015-16 in sports academies. “To achieve this goal State government has also set up the Punjab Institute of Sports with eleven directorates to emphasize on eleven sports disciplines,” he said.

He further informed that sports department has announced a schedule for selection trails for eligible players who have attained any position in sub-junior and junior category state competitions or national events. He said the selected players would be provided Rs. 5500 per month for training, food, physical and physiological training, medical and transport facilities. Besides a sports kit worth Rs. 10,000 would also be provided to facilitate them during their participation in national and international events.

Elaborating further the spokesman said selection trails would be held for Hockey (men and women) players at Olympian Surjeet Singh Hockey stadium Burlton Park Jalandhar on February 9, 10, 11, 12 and 14, trails for Football (men) to be organized at Guru Gobind Singh Stadium Jalandhar on February 13, 14, 15, 16 and 18, for Athletics at Sports School Jalandhar on February 16, 17, 18, 19 and 21 and Shooting trails at village Badal in Sri Mukatsar Sahib on February 17 and 18where as trails for Boxing would be held at Polo Ground Patiala on February 23 and 24.

He said that all eligible candidates could contact concerned district sports officer on fixed dates at 8 am for registration purposes. He informed that selected candidates would be imparted training in 10 sports academies set up at Olympion Surjeet Singh Hockey stadium Jalandhar, Football academy Mahilpur in Hoshiarpur, Hockey academy (women) at village Badal, dashmesh martial art and sports academy Sri Anandpur Sahib, sports school Jalandhar (men), sports wing govt. senior secondary school Kairon in Tarantaran district, Malwa khalsa college senior secondary school Ludhiana, sports wing coaching centre Rurkan Kalan in Jalandhar, sport wing coaching centre at SAS Nagar and Maharaja Ranjit Singh Hockey academy Amritsar.
