Chandigarh, April 27
Following a shortfall of oxygen in Punjab, the state will get 60 metric tonnes of the life-saving gas from Bokaro.
To save the transit time, empty tankers will be airlifted by the Indian Air Force from the Chandigarh airport today and transported to Bokaro. The refilled containers from Bokaro will travel by road and take three to four days to reach the state.
BBMB directed to restart oxygen plant
Ropar DC Sonali Giri has asked the BBMB to restart its oxygen generation plant at Nangal, which stopped operations in 2010
Giri said as the country was facing oxygen shortage, it was prudent that these resources be tapped and used judiciously
“We have been allocated 60 MT oxygen from Bokaro, which is likely to reach the state by April 30. We are going to airdrop empty tankers in Bokaro so that we can get the consignment early. The tankers will be refilled and sent to the state by road,” said Sibin C, Director, Industries and Commerce. The oxygen would be used for the treatment of critical Covid-19 patients.
Bokaro has already send an “Oxygen Express” train to Uttar Pradesh and is preparing to dispatch more liquid medical oxygen to the northern states, including Haryana, ravaged by Covid-19, according to insiders.
Presently, the daily requirement of oxygen for Covid patients in Punjab is around 200 MT. Of this, it will get 165 MT from outside, such as Dehradun, Baddi, Panipat, Roorkee, while the remaining is being catered to by state-based plants.
