We may have seen many doctors meeting their former patients. However, this heart-warming reunion between a Punjab surgeon and his former patient will leave you enamoured.
Dr Bhagwant Singh, a surgeon at Patiala’s Akal Hospital, was taken aback when he received an unexpected visitor at the hospital. It was his former patient Ram Sahai, a resident of Haridwar in Uttarakhand.
Ram Sahai had first visited Dr Singh at the hospital 11 years back.
He experienced severe pain and was advised to undergo an operation for his appendix.
However, Ram Sahai did not have enough money to bear the expenses for his surgery. The appendicitis surgery was, however, conducted by Dr Singh free of cost.
Speaking to India Today, Dr Singh recalled, “Ram Sahai was a daily wage labourer, when he came to the hospital.”
“He visited me while he was experiencing tremendous pain, but had no money. We have a policy that those who do not have money should not be denied medical care,” Dr Singh said.
“At that time, the surgery cost nearly Rs 15,000,” the doctor said.
Holding cash in his hands, Ram Sahai visited the doctor to pay for what he couldn’t, 11 years back.
Dr Singh and Ram Sahai gave each other a warm hug at the hospital.
“It is not the amount that brought tears to my eyes,” Dr Singh said, adding, “it is the fact that he kept it in mind for 11 years.”
“I was out of town, so he waited for two days. I am deeply touched,” the doctor said.
Speaking further, the doctor said, “Ram Sahai said I am a believer in Lord Krishna and I have to show my face to him when I am gone.”
No money was taken but those in hospital had tears of joy.
“What I did was under my purview and ability, but he saved money for all these years and what he did was way beyond his purview,” an emotional Dr Singh said.
