Punjab gets India`s 1st Technology & Innovation Support Centre

Chandigarh, July 14: The World Intellectual Property Organization of United Nations has set up its 1st Technology & Innovation Support Centre (TISC) of India in Punjab State Council for Science & Technology through Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of Commerce & Industry Government of India. Dr. Roshan Sunkaria, as Principal Secretary to Govt. of Punjab, Department of Science, Technology & Environment and Shri Rajiv Aggarwal, Joint Secretary to Govt. of India, Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of Commerce & Industry signed a formal agreement on July 13, 2017 at Udhyog Bhawan, New Delhi to mark the initiation of this Centre.

Dr. Jatinder Kaur Arora, Executive Director, Punjab State Council for Science & Technology (PSCST) who was also present on the occasion, informed that Punjab State Council for Science & Technology has a Category-1 Patent Information Centre supported by Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India, which is providing services for protection of Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) to industry & academia of Punjab & Chandigarh. DIPP, Govt. of India carried out a rigorous on-site assessment of expertise, infrastructure and activities of this Centre before selecting PSCST to host first TISC of the country. The setting up of TISC would facilitate access to International Standard IP facilities to the innovators of the region in terms of database access, training, case studies/best practices of other countries, experience sharing platform, IP commercialization & Technology transfer, etc. thereby strengthening the innovation ecosystem in this part of the country.

Mr. Gurharminder Singh, Sr. Scientist & Incharge (PIC) informed that the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion, Govt. of India is the nodal point for country’s interactions with WIPO. With the setting up of TISC, the Punjab State Council for Science & Technology, would also be working as key partner of Cell for IPR Promotion & Management of DIPP-GoI for fulfilment of objectives of the National IPR Policy and Startup India in the State of Punjab & Chandigarh.
