Chandigarh, The Punjab Congress would gherao the state Assembly currently in session on March 24 to protest against the dilution of the land acquisition legislation by the Narendra Modi government at the centre in which the Akali Dal is a partner and has supported the amendment bill in the Lok Sabha.
This was announced here today by the state party chief Mr Partap Singh Bajwa. He said that the program has been finalized in consultation with Dr Shakeel Ahmed, General Secretary AICC & Incharge Punjab Affairs, Sh. Harish Chaudhary, Secretary AICC & Incharge Punjab Affairs and Sh. Sunil Kumar Jakhar, CLP Leader. All the sitting MPs , MLAs, Candidates, Office Bearers and Heads of Frontal Organisation & Cells of PPCC have been asked to mobilize the workers for the protest.
He said the farmers all over the country were agitated against this pernicious move of the Modi government to appease the corporates. It was the UPA that had brought out the land legislation to protect the interests of the farmers but the same had been diluted by this anti-farmer government. He flayed the Akali Dal for supporting the bill in the Lok Sabha which had exposed the hollow claims of the party being the champion of the farmers.
He said another issue was the fixing the prices on the basis of the Swaminathan Committee recommendations according to which the farmers should get at least 50 per cent profit over and above the cost of inputs. He pointed out it was also the poll promise of the BJP from which the party had backtracked after coming into power.
Mr Bajwa listed the proposed unbundling of the Food Corporation of india as the third major step of this government against the farmers and made it clear that the BJP government would not be allowed to play with the future of farming community in the country as more than 60 per cent of the population in the country was depended upon agriculture.
The party workers would first gather in Sector 25 rally ground at 11.00 a.m. on 24th March. After the rally, the Congressmen would march to the Assembly to lodge their protests. This march will be led by Dr Shakeel Ahmed, General Secretary AICC & Incharge Punjab Affairs, Sh. Harish Chaudhary, Secretary AICC & Incharge Punjab Affairs, S. Partap Singh Bajwa, President PPCC and Sh. Sunil Kumar Jakhar, CLP Leader.
He said further programme of action would be announced after March 24 as the Congress could go to any extent to protect the interests of not only the farmers but every section of society.
