EDUCATION MINISTER FELICITATES JUNIOR WORLD BOXING CHAMPION
* CASH PRIZE TO BE CONFERRED TO THE CHAMPION AT A FUNCTION ON MAY 27 AT LUDHIANA
* THE GOVERNMENT SANCTION TWO WINGS FOR BOXING AT VILLAGE CHAKAR
CHANDIGARH, MAY 25: The Punjab Education Minister Dr. Daljit singh Cheema today extended warm welcome to the Junior World Champion Miss Mandeep Kaur Sandhu today on his arrival in Chandigarh. The boxer was on her way back to village Chakar (District Ludhiana) landed at Chandigarh airport after winning the coveted title of Junior World Championship of Boxing held at Taipei. The Minister announced a cash prize of Rs. one lakh to the ‘Golden Girl’of Punjab that would be conferred during a function to be held at Guru Nanak Bhawan Ludhiana on May 27.
Dr. Cheema honoured the Golden Girl at Punjab Civil Secretariat with `Fulkari’ and `Shawal’ amidst cheers and clapping of fans, parents, coaches and sports lovers. Speaking on the occasion Dr. Cheema said that is a rare and splendid achievement of a daughter of the soil of Punjab. The Education Minister also announced to sanction two wings (U-14 Girls and U-17 Boys) of Boxing for School of village Chakar. Each wing would accommodate 13 boxers. “the Punjab cabinet has approved the recruitment of 125 sportspersons in police department. Sports persons would be recruited for the post of DSP, Sub Inspector and Constable as per their achievements in the national and international sports events.’’, he added.
Besides Mandeep Kaur’s parents Jagdev Singh and Daljit Kaur Dr. Cheema also honoured Coach Davinder Singh SP and Coach Surinder Kaur and brother Jagwinder Singh. On this occasion Mrs. Tejinder Kaur Dhaliwal, Chairperson, Punjab School Education Board was also present.
