Bathinda, The government’s decision to go ahead with their foundation stone laying spree and political rallies boomeranged today.
Underestimating the prevailing situation and public anger against the government, PWD Minister and Maur MLA Janmeja Singh Sekhon today went to lay the foundation stone of a road amid high security. He faced opposition by farmers and activists of various Sikh organisations.
The protesters soon turned violent and set the tent on fire, besides damaging the foundation stone. The incident took place when a group of over 100 farmers and activists sitting on a dharna were “challenged” by the police for raising anti-government slogans.
“The protesters turned violent after an ASI snatched the mike from one of their leaders speaking on the occasion,” said block president of BKU (Ekta-Ugraha) Master Sukhdev.
Chaotic scenes were witnessed soon after an announcement regarding the arrival of the minister was made. Though Sekhon did not get down from his vehicle and left the place, the police tried to stop the protesters from raising slogans.
“SAD workers joined the police to rein in protesters. The entire village then stood up against the policemen and SAD workers,” said Sukhjeewan Singh, an activist.
A clash took place where six policemen and four activists were injured. The police reportedly resorted to lathicharge to control the mob.
“A case will be registered against 10-15 persons by name and 40-45 unidentified,” said Balianwali SHO Balwinder Singh.
Deputy Commissioner Basant Garg, who rushed to the spot, said: “Anti-social elements are instigating people to take law in their hands. We will not allow anyone vitiate peace in the state.”
