Jalandhar, Cutting across party lines, politicians attended Guru Purnima function organised by the Divya Jyoti Jagriti Sansthan today, four days after the Punjab and Haryana High Court allowed the Nurmahal-based sect to preserve the body of its founder, Ashutosh.
Delivering sermons to thousands of devotees, the sansthan reiterated its stand that Ashutosh was in ‘samadhi’ (state of deep meditation) and would return soon.
Those present included state BJP chief and Union Minister Vijay Sampla; Congress MP from Jalandhar Santokh Chaudhary; Cabinet Minister Sadhu Singh Dharamsot; Mandi Board chairman and ex-minister Lal Singh; Congress MLAs Bawa Henry, Surinder Chaudhary and Rajinder Beri; BJP legislator Som Parkash; SAD MLA Gurpartap Singh Wadala; former BJP minister Tikshan Sud; Jalandhar Mayor Sunil Jyoti; and former Mayor Rakesh Rathore.
Dharamsot also issued a press release, lauding “the enormous contribution of the Divya Jyoti Jagriti Sansthan in the service of humanity”, adding that “spiritual leaders could play a key role in curbing social maladies in the state by making people aware about them.”
The sect head’s body has been in a deep freezer for the past over three years, ever since he was declared “clinically dead” by doctors on the night of January 29, 2014.
