On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi kickstarted his historic one-day trip to Greece as the first Indian premier to visit the Mediterranean nation in 40 years.
After conducting delegation-level talks with the Greek counterpart, PM Modi and Kyriakos Mitsotakis conducted a joint press conference. In the press meet, the Indian PM reaffirmed India’s solidarity with Greece and expressed his gratitude upon receiving the Grand Cross of the Order of Honour.
The press briefing started with the address from Mitsotakis. During his address, the Greek Prime Minister lauded Indian democracy. “It’s an honour that the leader of the world’s biggest democracy is being hosted by the world’s oldest democracy,” he said. Mitsotakis went on to congratulate India for the successful Chandrayaan-3 mission, asserting that India has “conquered the moon,”. PM Modi, on the other hand, thanked the Greek premier for his hospitality and expressed the Intentions to bolster the ties between the two nations.

During the press briefing, Prime Minister Modi described the Indo-Greek ties as a “natural match,” insisting that the two nations shared “historical and traditional ties”. “Greece and India are a natural match between two ancient civilisations of the world, between two ancient democratic ideologies and between two ancient trade and cultural relations. The foundation of our relationship is ancient and strong,” the Prime Minister asserted in the press briefing. PM Modi further pointed out how the two nations are witnessing this moment after a long 40-year gap. “After a long gap of 40 years, an Indian Prime Minister has come to Greece. Still, the depth and warmth of our relations have not decreased. So the (Greek) PM and I have decided to take India-Greek relations to a strategic level,” added.

In his keynote speech, the Prime Minister stated that the two nations will strengthen their ties in the trade and agricultural sectors. “We have decided to increase our cooperation in the areas of defence and security, infrastructure, agriculture, education, new and emerging technology and skill development and strengthen our strategic partnership,” he said.

I am thankful to him for his best wishes and encouragement for India’s G20 presidency,” PM Modi said.

PM offers sympathies to the wildfire victims
The Prime Minister offered condolences to the victims of the Greek wildfire that claimed the lives of at least 20 people. “I would like to give my sympathies to the victims of the wildfire. I hope the people who were injured in the devastating wildfire recover soon,” he asserted. The European nation witnessed a devastating wildfire days after it struggled with a massive heatwave.

During the press address, the Prime Minister thanked Greece for felicitating him with the Grand Cross of the Order of Honour. “I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the people and President of the Hellenic Republic for honouring me with The Grand Cross of the Order of Honour,” he said. “I accepted this on behalf of 140 crore Indians and expressed my gratitude,” he added. On Friday, Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou bestowed upon PM Modi one of the highest honour in Greece.
