Chandigarh, July 9
Punjab’s Leader of Opposition HS Phoolka on Sunday announced he would resign from his post, two days after he said he would quit from his position if the Delhi Bar Council did not allow him to appear in 1984 Sikh riots cases.
Aam Aadmi Party leader Phoolka has asked party chief Arvind Kejriwal to find his replacement within a week and has recommended three names from the party — Kanwar Sandhu, Sukhpal Khaira and Aman Arora.
The Delhi Bar Council had disallowed Phoolka to appear for the victims in several cases against Congress leader Sajjan Kumar and others.
The Council said Phoolka was a Cabinet minister, which is an office of profit. The Cabinet Minister status provides Rs 2 lakh salary and perks per month, and is given to the Leader of Opposition in a state Assembly.
Phoolka said he would resign as soon as the party found a replacement, adding that he had been considering his choices ever since the Delhi Bar Council refused to allow him to represent victims of the riots cases because of his position.
Kejriwal, however, has asked him to find a solution so that he could hold the post of Leader of Opposition as well as fight cases of riot victims.

Phoolka had previously resigned from party positions in September 2015 to give his attention to the riots cases in which he represents victims.
Phoolka, a Supreme Court lawyer, had won by 4,169 votes from Dakha in Ludhiana.
