One person suffered minor injuries after three streetcars collided and became stuck together on Queen Street East just west of the Don River Friday morning.
Toronto paramedics said they were called to Queen Street East and River Street at 2:34 a.m. Friday for a report of a streetcar collision. One person was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.
TTC spokesperson Danny Nicholson says crews are working to separate the three streetcars, which have become “sandwiched” together as a result of the crash.Police said the collision occurred after one streetcar heading eastbound on Queen Street East, up the hill at River Street suddenly lost propulsion power and rolled backwards, striking a streetcar behind it, which struck a third streetcar further behind.
TTC spokesperson Brad Ross said the streetcar’s braking system should have engaged when it lost power, to keep it from rolling back. Instead, Ross said the streetcar rolled more than 30 metres backwards before it struck the next streetcar.
Ross said engineers will be inspecting the streetcar that lost propulsion to find out what went wrong. He said the overhead catenary wires in that area were not to blame.
A worker was seen using a welding torch to cut two of the streetcars apart.
All eastbound streetcar traffic was impacted by the collision, with the 501 Queen streetcar route diverting via Parliament Street, Dundas Street East and Broadview Avenue.
The intersection re-opened to all vehicle and streetcar traffic at about 7:30 a.m. Friday.
