PCC for early announcement of candidates; body being announced soon

CHANDIGARH, December 26: Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Capt Amarinder Singh today said that the state unit will press for the early announcement of candidates for the assembly elections scheduled to be held in 2017. He also said that the PCC was being reconstituted and it will be announced very soon.

Addressing a press conference after inducting workers and leaders from the Shiromani Akali Dal, the Aam Aadmi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party, into the Congress here today, Capt Amarinder said, while the SAD-BJP alliance was on the way out, the AAP was no challenge to the Congress.

Capt Amarinder was accompanied by senior party leaders including former union minister Manish Tewari, Jagmeet Singh Brar, Laal Singh and Sunil Jakhar.

Lashing out at the ruling alliance, he said, with every passing day it was getting from bad to worse in Punjab with law and order being the worst casualty. He said, while a senior Akali leader was involved in the killing and brutal amputation of two dalits in Abohar, limbs of three other youth were amputated in Cheema Mandi in Sunam.

The PCC president also condemned the attempts of the state government to muzzle the freedom of the press. He referred to the attempts by the state government to falsely implicate a senior journalist. He warned that the Congress will not allow the government to resort to such authoritarian ways. He said, the state government was getting desperate and trying to vent its frustration on everybody.

Replying to a question about the AAP prospects in the state, he said, the party did not stand any chance in Punjab. He said, the people of Delhi were feeling disappointed and disillusioned with the AAP government there as it had not fulfilled a single promise it had made to the people.

Capt Amarinder ridiculed the allegations of having any understanding with the Badals. He pointed out, he had falsely been implicated by the Badals in two cases and has been fighting these cases in the courts for last nine years. “The only defence I have is in the courts as otherwise the Badals tried everything to implicate me”, he said while replying to a question on the issue.

Earlier, several senior leaders from the Akali Dal, the BSP and the AAP joined the party along with hundreds of their supporters. They included a sitting SGPC member Inder Mohan Singh Lakhmirwala and several sitting and independent councillors from Moga.
