Provincial police have identified a 69-year-man who was mortally wounded when a wheel flew off a truck on Highway 400 in King Township on Wednesday morning and smashed into his SUV.
At about 9 a.m. on Wednesday, police said a truck carrying lumber was heading south on Highway 400 near King Road, when it lost a set of wheels.
One of the wheels bounced across the highway towards the northbound lanes, and witnesses at the scene said it struck the front roof section of a GMC Yukon SUV.
The vehicle crossed the shoulder and exited the roadway before coming to rest near some brush.
Firefighters extricated the lone occupant of the vehicle and he was flown to a hospital trauma centre via Ornge air ambulance.
Sgt. Kerry Schmidt says Paul Philip Koenderman died in hospital on Wednesday night.
Investigators said on Wednesday they were checking the truck’s maintenance records to gather evidence as to why the set of wheels could have come loose.
