New Delhi, April 18
The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) president Raninder Singh has called for the boycott of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in case shooting doesn’t feature in the Games’ programme. Birmingham, the host of the 2022 Games, has already announced its plan to drop the sport. The hosts have the right to drop any optional discipline, which shooting is.
“I am going to use this forum to request the Indian government to boycott the Birmingham Commonwealth Games,” Singh said during the felicitation of the 2018 Gold Coast medallists here on Tuesday. “What is the logic behind it (dropping shooting)? 30 percent of India’s medal will be put in the dustbin”
“How was the decision taken? And what were the mitigating circumstances? We recognise it’s their right, but you don’t tinker with formats like this. I will write to the minister and to the IOA president to take this very seriously,” said the NRAI chief.
Singh said the efforts were still on to get the discipline back. “It’s unfair that one of the major sports in the Olympic Games is being treated in a shabby manner. We have invested public funds for decades in the sport to reach this level and suddenly you are told that they would have gulli danda instead,” said Singh.
