Amritsar, Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Sunil Jakhar today lambasted the SAD-BJP coalition government for delay in announcing relief package to farmers whose standing crops got damaged due to untimely rain.
Talking to the media, he said crops such as wheat, vegetable, fodder, cereals over 3 lakh hectares of land were damaged.
He said the state required Rs 358.68 crore to pay compensation to the farmers. It already had Rs 293 crore central funds at its disposal. “It means that the state dispensation needs just Rs 65.68 crore more to compensate farmers. But the government is yet to announce any relief.”
He said he would take up the matter at the proposed Congress rally against the government’s land acquisition Bill in Delhi on April 19.
The Congress leader said the BJP too had turned a blind eye towards the farmers’ cause.
He claimed on the pretext of making Amritsar a “smart city”, the Modi government scrapped three major infrastructure projects worth Rs 557 crore in the holy city which were approved by the Manmohan Singh government.
