New Delhi: By crushing Sri Lanka on Monday by eight wickets in the first Test, the Kiwis gave their countrymen yet another reason to celebrate the new year.
Winning the first Test of the two-match series meant New Zealand have won five Test matches in this calender year, which is the highest number of victories by the Black Caps in a single year since 1930. In their 85-year-long Test cricket history, it’s the fist time they managed to win more than four Tests.
Throughout the year, the seventh ranked New Zealand played outstanding cricket. They started off the year with a series against india at home, where they beat the tourists 1-0 in the two-match series.
Then under the captaincy of Brendon McCullum, the side visited West Indies to play a three-match series and eventually the tourists came out triumphant as they beat the home side 2-1.
In November the Kiwis went to UAE to play another away series against Pakistan where they drew the three-match series 1-1.
And now in the on-going home series against Sri Lanka, they are leading 1-0.
It has certainly been a fabulous year for the Back Caps and they will soon be benefited from that. According to few cricket statisticians, they will jump from seventh to third or fourth spot in the ICC Test rankings by the end of this year.
