Toronto: – Justin Trudeau’s Liberals appear to have a strong following in not only Toronto, but also the surrounding GTA, according to a new poll.
Forum Research surveyed 1,183 voters in Toronto as well as Durham, York, Peel and Halton regions and found that more than 41 per cent of respondents said they will vote Liberal on Oct. 19.
Of those surveyed, 31 per cent said they would vote Conservative and 24 per cent said they would support the NDP.
When looking specifically at the regions outside Toronto, the Liberals saw 43 per cent support from voters in the surrounding GTA compared to 33 per cent support for the Conservatives and 20 per cent for the NDP.
The NDP’s support in Toronto was 31 per cent compared to just 20 per cent in the suburbs, according to the poll.
The Liberals netted nearly half of the votes in Peel (45 per cent) and Halton (44 per cent) while the Conservatives saw the strongest support in York Region (39 per cent). The NDP trailed in all regions with 23 per cent support in Durham, 24 per cent in York Region, 16 per cent support in Halton and 24 per cent in Peel.
In North York, the Conservatives had 50 per cent support from those surveyed.
“While it is known that Toronto is Liberal heartland, it is surprising to see this poll dispel the myth of the monolithic Conservative vote in the 905 area code,” Lorne Bozinoff, president of Forum Research, said in a written statement released with the poll.
“In fact, the outlying areas of the GTA are more Liberal than Conservative. This turn to the Liberals in the 905 may be ascribed to increasing dissatisfaction from ethnic communities on the Conservative views on immigration and, now, the niqab.”
