New poll finds equal number of voters trust Harper, Mulcair on economy

ca44A new poll found an equal number of respondents said they trust NDP leader Thomas Mulcair and Prime Minister Stephen Harper on managing Canada’s economy, but fewer respondents indicated they trust in Liberal leader Justin Trudeau’s economic management skills.
The poll, conducted by Nanos found Harper and Mulcair got the nod of 31 per cent of respondents each when asked who would manage Canada’s economy the best. Trudeau was the top choice for only 18 per cent of respondents.
Eighty per cent of respondents said they felt the government has a “major role” in the country’s economic performance. Two thirds of respondents indicated it “is time for a change” in government, while about one quarter said they’d prefer the status quo.
In light of the Conservative Party’s decision to ditch televised debates put on by the major broadcasters in Canada in favour of ones run by individual media outlets, the poll finds that major televised debates — including all of the party leaders — are still worthwhile. A full 84 per cent of respondents indicated that federal leaders attending debates is “important” or “somewhat important.”
The hybrid phone/online survey was conducted between July 18 and July 22, reaching 1,000 adults across the country. The margin of error for the poll is +/- 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
