National child panel official asks admn to review safety in schools

Amritsar

Rozi Taba, a member of National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, today visited the holy city to probe the incident in which an eight-year-old girl was raped by a boy of the same school on December 13.

Though the police have registered a case and arrested the juvenile accused, angry residents have launched an agitation outside the school complex against the management for its negligence.

Taba met the police investigating team, headed by SP Amandeep Kaur, SDM and members of the inquiry committee constituted by the Deputy Commissioner to look into the role and laxity on part of the school management. She recorded their statements and issued necessary instructions to them.

She also met the parents and the board that carried out the medical examination of the victim. She asked the authorities to arrange a counsellor for the victim so that she could come out of the trauma. Taba said the commission would also look into the role or any laxity on part of the school management and assured appropriate action if the management was found guilty.
She also asked the district education authorities to inspect every school and evaluate safety and security of students. In case they find any laxity, they should recommend the closure of the school, she said.

Taba asked the officials to implement the norms laid down by the commission in letter and spirit. She expressed concern over rising incidents of sexual exploitation of children in society. She said every school should have a counsellor for mental health of children besides giving emphasis on moral education.
