Mulcair says NDP ‘not entertaining’ running a deficit if elected

ca4LONDON, Ont. — NDP Leader Tom Mulcair says ending income splitting and raising corporate taxes won’t be enough to balance a budget, but he won’t yet discuss the full cost of his platform.
Mulcair says an NDP government would not run a deficit, even if market forces change, saying “we are not entertaining any thought of that.”
The NDP leader toured a small manufacturing business in London, Ontario today to highlight a proposed tax credit for businesses that invest in machinery, equipment and property used in innovative research and development.
Mulcair also says he would lower the small business tax rate, but he is not yet talking about what spending cuts would be needed to ensure his budget would be balanced.
When asked about cuts, he talked about making “difficult decisions” around the cabinet table, but said he would be rolling out a fully costed platform.
The Liberals have pounced on Mulcair’s talk of balanced budgets — saying it’s evidence of an austerity agenda.
Leader Justin Trudeau says the only way the NDP can stay in the black is through massive cuts and not delivering on big-budget spending promises such as 15-dollar-a-day child care.
