Mohali, Mohali Additional District and Sessions Judge Tarsem Mangla today turned down suspended Inspector-General Gautam Cheema’s anticipatory bail applications in the Kricpy molestation case and a kidnapping case. Cheema is accused of taking away Sumedh Gulati, a proclaimed offender, from the police lockup.
The court will hear the anticipatory bail application of Cheema’s co-accused in both cases, Ajay Chaudhary, on October 10.
Sources said the public prosecutor opposed anticipatory bail for Cheema on the plea that being one of the top functionaries of the Punjab Police, he (Cheema) could influence the course of investigation. The Mohali court has already granted interim bail to a woman accused in the Kricpy molestation case.
Cheema had moved an anticipatory bail application on September 23 after Mohali Additional District and Sessions Judge Shiv Mohan Garg issued warrants for his arrest on September 15.
The court had directed the Mohali Police to produce Cheema before September 27.
With the Mohali police failing to arrest Cheema, the court today directed that Cheema be produced before it by October 15.
