Driving Naari Programme launched in Chandigarh
Amritsar, January 6: Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh was reduced to non-functional chief of this supreme religio-political seat representing sovereignty of the Sikh doctrine at the anniversary function of martyrdom of Satwant Singh and Kehar and kehar Singh, assassins of then prime minister Indira Gandhi, observed here today.
The anniversaries of Beant Singh, Satwant Singh and Kehar Singh are observed at Akal Takht every year with the function being organized by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee. They had been declared martyrs by the Akal Takht.
It may be mentioned that the Akal Takht Jathedar, who is facing people’s ire for the last several months and keeping himself away from public stage, today joined the anniversary function. The Panj Piaras have recently given the call for his boycott and even earlier, he was not allowed to deliver his customary address at the concluding function during 3-day Jor Mela at Fatehgarh Sahib.
It may be mentioned that the first call to boycott the Jathedar had been given by the Dal Khalsa after which its general secretary Kanwarpal Singh was arrested and detained for several days.
The Akal Takht Jathedar today sat among the audience and left without addessing the devotees.
It was Kanwarpal who made it known to the SGPC people managing the function to take care so that the function was not disturbed as there might be slogan shouting in case the Jathedar delivered his address. The issue was taken care of immediately.
It was Darbar Sahib Granthi Man Singh who honoured mother and brother of Satwant Singh with Siropa.
Giani Gurbachan Singh, reduced to non-functional head of this supreme seat, left quietly after the function.
Both Satwant Singh and Kehar Singh were hanged in Tihar jail.
