Dhuri (Sangrur), Bikram Kumar (36) from Dhanaula in Barnala, who had thrown a shoe towards CM Parkash Singh Badal, filed his nomination for the Dhuri Assembly bypoll today.
Bikram, who had hurled the shoe at a political conference in Issru, near Khanna, on August 15 last year, would be contesting as an Independent. So far, three candidates have filed their nomination, the other two being Surjit Singh Kalabula of the SAD (Amritsar) and Manjit Kaur of Jai Jawan Jai Kisan Party.
Bikram said neither he had approached any political party nor had he been so far contacted with support for the byelection. He said as he lacked funds for campaign, he would go door to door on bicycles, scooters and even on foot.
Asking the Congress to opt out of the contest, he alleged three of its MLAs had already resigned in an attempt to provide absolute majority to the SAD in the Assembly. “We will raise issues like drug abuse, unemployment, land acquisition, deteriorating law and order and poor education and health system,” he said.
Before the shoe-throwing incident, Bikram was an active AAP member in Dhanaula. He reportedly played a vital role in ensuring lead for the party’s candidate from his native place during the Lok Sabha elections.
