Chandigarh, Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia has finally reacted against the mischievous and malicious slander campaign launched against him for the last some months by a section of the media despite the fact that that he is above board.
He filed a defamation suit yesterday against the editor and reporter of a Chandigarh based English daily in the court of Additional CJM Parminder Singh Rai in Amritsar. He has filed this case under Sections 499 and 500.
He personally got his preliminary statement recorded in the court. He referred to the news item in that paper concerning drug smuggling in which he had been unnecessary defamed, maligned and denigrated despite the fact that he had been given clean chit by the Enforcement Directorate investigating the case.
He said his name had also been linked to money laundering in Canada while the fact of the matter was that he had not visited that country since 2001. He substantiated his charge against the paper by producing two news items to this effect in which his name had been unnecessarily dragged.
He prayed that his reputation had been hit following the publication of these baseless and unfounded news items.
The next hearing has been fixed for May 21.
He was accompanied by advocates R K Handa, D S Sobti and A S Syali.
