Chandigarh, The Punjab government has provided for life term for sacrilege of Guru Granth sahib.
Similarly, term in case of sacrilege of shrine and the associated crime has been hiked to 10 years.
The Punjab Vidhan Sabha today adopted The Indian Penal Code (Punjab Amendment) Bill, 2016 and the Code of Criminal Procedure (Punjab Amendment) Bill, 2016 to this effect.
These Bills were moved by Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal who is also the Home Minister. Congress MLA Tarlochan Singh proposed that Bhagwad Gita and Bible should also be included for providing life term for sacrilege. He was later supported by Leader of the Opposition Charanjit Singh Channi.
The Vidhan Sabha passed eight Bills including the one that bans use of plastic bags.
The House also adopted the Punjab Agricultural Produce Markets (Amendment) Bill to provide health insurance cover of Rs 50,000 to farmers.
