New Delhi, Opposition parties, especially the Left, today launched a frontal attack on the Modi government over developments in various universities charging that attempts were being made to push its political agenda and muffling voices of dissent.
Sitaram Yechury of the CPM and D Raja of the CPI said the thrust of government policies was to benefit rich industrialists at the expense of the ordinary.
Participating in a debate on the motion of thanks to the President’s address, Yechury said developments in JNU and Hyderabad fit into a “jigsaw where the aim is to metamorphose the country into a Hindu Rashtra… as per vision of the RSS”.
Drawing parallels to historical developments in Hitler’s Germany, Yechury said the manner in which intolerance was being displayed in institutes of higher learning reminded of the way Hitler used nationalism to establish fascism. He cited Allahabad and events at FTII and IIT Chennai as cases in point.
On the handling of economy, he christened the NDA government policies as “Jumla-nomics” and said claims made in the run up to the General Election remained unfulfilled.
He also cited a 2013 write-up by Arun Jaitley slamming the Aadhaar scheme and sought to underscore how the Finance Minister changed his position on the issue. He also criticised the move to introduce the proposed legislation as a Money Bill that would not allow the Rajya Sabha to make any substantial changes to it.
Yechury slammed the government for giving tax concessions of over Rs 5 lakh crore to big businesses and corporates.
