OTTAWA — Lawyer and author William Kaplan has been appointed to try and bring an end to the months-long labour dispute at Canada Post.
Labour Minister MaryAnn Mihychuk says she hopes the Toronto-based mediator can avert a threatened work stoppage by members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers.
The union issued a 72-hour strike notice yesterday, accusing Canada Post of forcing a labour disruption.
Contract talks between the Crown corporation and CUPW reached an impasse this week with both sides saying they remain far apart on key issues including pay scales for rural letter carriers and proposed changes to pensions for future employees.
Meantime, Canada Post has revealed that it earned a profit of about $1 million in the second quarter of operations this year.
But in a statement, it also warned that the company’s pension solvency deficit rose dramatically, to an estimated $8.1 billion as of July 1, up from $6.1 billion at the end of last year.
