KOLLAM: A 20-year-old computer geek’s casual outing in online platform has won him a cash prize of `7 lakh from social media giant Facebook. Arun S Kumar, a computer engineering student with the MES Institute of Technology and Management, Chathanoor here, said that the prize money was presented to him for his discovery of a bug, which has the magnitude to bring down the Facebook into shambles.
“It was during one of my usual searches that I found lookaside.facebook.com. Probing further, I found that the domain is affected by a malfunction named Full Account Takeover, in which a hacker could easily trespass into any Facebook account without the knowledge or approval of the owner in less than 10 minutes. Though I identified this bug in March, at first the Facebook authorities were reluctant to accept the flaw. After several intimations, they responded and fixed the problem,” said Arun. According to him, this is not for the first time that Facebook is awarding him. In 2014 and 2015 he was included in its Hall of Fame for pointing out its security flaws. Arun, a native of Mundakkal, here is the son of P S Sureshkumar, a government employee, and Nagalakshmi K, a housewife.
