Kidney stones: Rise in cases among teen girls, expert says sodium-rich diet major cause

New Delhi: Kidney stones are becoming increasingly common health issues affecting people of all ages and genders. Though it is more common in males, recent data have shown a concerning rise in renal stones in teenage girls.

Dr Kshitij Raghuvanshi – Urologist, Ruby Hall Clinic, Pune, enlighten on the kidney stones causes and factors responsible for it.

“Foremost, the most important factors are the changing dietary habits of young girls, who eat processed foods, sugary beverages, and sodium-rich snacks, which lead to an imbalance in their bodies chemical composition, thereby increasing the risk of stones,” he said.

Kidney stones causes

Lack of drinking water leads to concentrated urine, causing minerals and other substances to aggregate together to form nidus, leading to stone formation. The expert added, “Lately, the sedentary lifestyle of girls has led to obesity, which in turn leads to metabolic disorders and hormonal imbalances that increase the risk of stone formation.”

Last but not least, there is always the genetic predisposition that is stone in farther and brother is most likely to find stone in the teenage girl of the house.

Prevention

Prevention measures include adequate hydration, healthy eating habits, and a balanced diet. avoid preservatives regular physical activity. Girls with a family history of stones may require genetic counselling to determine individual risk factors and education about risk factors for young girls to help them prevent renal stones.

Treatment of renal stones is needed when, unfortunately, some young soul has a renal stone. The right person to get an opinion is a urologist, as many times surgeries can be avoided, and follow-up with a urologist prevents further episodes of kidney stones.
