New Delhi, December 2
In a relief to Punjab’s Leader of Opposition and AAP MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira, the Supreme Court today stayed a Fazilka court order summoning him in a drug smuggling case.
Acting on Khaira’s petition, challenging a Punjab and Haryana High Court order rejecting his plea against the summons, a Bench headed by Justice NV Ramana issued a notice to the Punjab Government. “There shall be stay of further proceedings before the trial court,” it said.
The Fazilka court had issued a non-bailable warrant (NBW) against the AAP leader in the March 2015 drug smuggling case. The High Court, quashing the NBW, had asked the court to decide the case on merit. However, it rejected Khaira’s plea for quashing the summons.
