Kerala student who refused to abandon her dog in Ukraine, faces one last hurdle

Arya Aldrin, a medical student in Ukraine, grabbed headlines when she refused to leave her five-month-old Siberian puppy, Zaira behind during the evacuation.

Now, she faces one last hurdle to bring Zaira home.

An Air Asia chartered flight that is scheduled to bring Arya and Zaira back to Kerala has refused to allow the animal in. Arya remains adamant, claiming she will opt for other flight services that will allow Zaira to travel with her.

Arya is a native of Kerala’s Idukki district. She had adopted Zaira while she was studying medicine. She had to evacuate Ukraine following the Russian invasion.

She reportedly tried to find a shelter home for Zaira but to no avail. Eventually, she decided to bring the puppy to Kerala. She was praised for this decision by Kerala Education Minister V Sivankutty on Facebook.

India has been evacuating its citizens via special flights from Ukraine’s western neighbours such as Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and Poland as the Ukrainian airspace has been shut due to the Russian attack.

India had asked Russia to facilitate the safe passage of Indians from various conflict zones after the killing of Naveen, an Indian student in Kharkiv shelling.
