Chandigarh, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab affairs in-Charge Sanjay Singh on Wednesday said that during his one day visit to Punjab, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has clearly stated that he was against the construction of the SYL since Punjab did not have adequate water for its own consumption and irrigation purpose.
Now it is up to AICC, President Sonia Gandhi and BJP, Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make their stand clear on the SYL issue, said Sanjay Singh.
Sanjay said that Kejriwal has always stood for justice and for the rights of the common man and has taken the same stand in the case of SYL too.
Sanjay Singh said that Kejriwal has rightly said that Punjab doesn’t have adequate water to irrigate its own agricultural fields and the level of the ground water has also gone down to an alarming level. In such a situation, Punjab is not in a position to give water to any other state.
Addressing the press conference along with AAP Punjab Convener, Sucha Singh Chhotepur, AAP Legal Head Cell, Himmat Singh Shergill and Party Spokesperson, Yamini Gomar, Sanjay Singh Said that after the statement of Arvind Kejriwal, Congrees National President Sonia Gandhi, Vice President, Rahul Gandhi, Prime Minister, Narendra Modi and BJP National President, Amit Shah should also clear their stand over the SYL issue.
Sanjay Singh also expressed dismay why the issue of SYL always brought up near the elections in Punjab and is ignored after the elections are over.
If the intentions of the successive governments at the centre were right then the river water issue between Punjab and Haryana should have been resolved long time ago. He said that the Badals and Punjab Congress was making an issue around the elections only to politicize the matter to garner votes.
Sanjay Singh said that the present situation of ground water in Punjab including Bathinda, Fazilka, Mansa and Sri Mukatsar Sahib Districts has gone from bad to worse. The people of the state especially in Malwa region are suffering from water born diseases like Cancer due to the polluted ground water.
In this situation if Kejriwal has opposed SYL then it is sheer out of concern and not politics. Answering a question, Sanjay Singh said that AAP has always been against the politics of divide and rule and this is the trademark of Congress and Modi.
He said Badal who notified the SYL and started the construction work of canal is now trying to get political mileage by de-notifying it. AAP Legal Head Cell, Himmat Singh Shergill showed the copy of the notification for land acquisition released by Parkash Singh Badal led government on February 20, 1978.
Appoint separate Governor for Punjab: Chhotepur
On the issue of common Governor for Punjab and Haryana, AAP Punjab Convener, Sucha Singh Chhotepur said that it is illogical and funny that while speaking in the Punjab Assembly the same governor talks of no additional water but in Haryana he says that this stand of Punjab Government is constitutionally wrong in the matter. He said that the centre should immediately appoint a separate Governor for Punjab.
