Kuching (Malaysia), Ajay Jayaram lost to fifth seed South Korea’s Son Wan Ho in the men’s singles quarterfinals here today, bringing down curtains on India’s campaign at the Malaysia Open Super Series. World No. 20 Jayaram, the lone Indian to have crossed the first-round barrier in the tournament, was handed a 18-21 14-21 defeat in 37 minutes by the South Korean.
The Indian had a poor start, and trailed 5-11 at the break. He fought back well and bridged down the gap to 13-14 but Son again surged ahead to open up a 17-13 lead. Jayaram came back again to make it 17-17. He, however, couldn’t sustain the tempo, and the world No. 5 took the game 21-18.
Jayaram fought hard at the start of the second game, but Son still led by 11-8 at the break. The contest turned completely one-sided after the break as the South Korean, helped by unforced errors by the Indian, took firm control of the proceedings and wrapped up the game 21-14 and the match without any problem.
