Jaspal Singh Sandhu appointed as Vice-Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University

Amritsar, August 14, 2017 – Professor Dr. Jaspal Singh Sandhu, Secretary, University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi and Professor in the Department of Sports Medicine & Physiotherapy of Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar has been appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University. His Excellency, The Governor of Punjab and Chancellor of the University, Sh. V.P. Singh Badnore has appointed Prof. Sandhu as Vice-Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University for three years.

Before joining as Secretary, UGC, Prof. Dr. Jaspal Singh Sandhu held many academic and administrative positions in the University. He has established the first department of Sports Medicine in Indian university system in the year 2004 which was recognized by UGC under “Centre with Potential for Excellence in Particular Area” programme.

Due to his innovation, number of interdisciplinary programmes have been initiated in the University and provide support to the sports persons. These programme include Ph.D. in Sports Medicine, Masters in Sports Physical Therapy, Masters in Excercise Physiology and Nutrition, Masters in Sports Psychology etc. He is Fellow of National Academy of Medical Sciences (India), Fellow of the International Federation of Sports Medicine, Fellow of Asian Federation of Sports Medicine etc. He is the first Indian as Secretary General of Asian Federation of Sports Medicine and allied areas. He has 235 research publications in journals of international repute.

By training, he is an Orthopedic Surgeon with special interest in research and education in Sports Medicine. He is also a member of Editorial and Advisory Boards of number of international institutions.
