Chandigarh, The Opposition Congress today accused the SAD-BJP coalition of “running away” from discussion on important issues, particularly the drug trade.
Speaking to the media, Congress Legislature Party Leader Sunil Jakhar said, “They are making every effort to circumvent the important drug issue by prolonging discussions on other issues. The Chief Minister has not responded to our question whether Bikram Majithia was summoned as a witness or an accused by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).”
Jakhar alleged the government was “pressuring” the ED officials who were investigating the multi-crore synthetic drug racket. “We are seeking a fair probe into the racket whereas they are sparing no effort to influence the officials.”
On the “clean chit” to Majithia by the CM, Jakhar questioned, “Who is Badal to give a clean chit to anybody. It can only be done by the court.”
Jakhar, accompanied by senior Congress leaders Ashwani Sekhri and Dr Raj Kumar Verka, alleged that the SAD was adopting “double standards” on every issue. “Badal today said he was strongly in favour of consent of farmers in case of their land acquisition by the government, but the SAD MPs voted in favour of a diluted and anti-farmer land Bill in Parliament. Similarly, former minister Sarwan Singh Phillaur was asked to tender his resignation even when his son’s name had surfaced in the ED probe. But the same yardstick is not being applied in Majithia’s case, who is being allowed to continue in the Cabinet.”
