It took changing of three parties, an electoral loss and the denial of a Rajya Sabha ticket before luck finally smiled on singer-turned-politician Hans Raj Hans, who won the North West Delhi seat with a margin of 5,53,075 votes. After quitting the Congress in 2016, the Jalandhar-born singer created a record in his constituency in the 2019 elections.
Speaking to The Tribune, Hans said, “I worked hard in every party. Meri kismat main kuch nahi kehnda (It’s destiny, I don’t blame anyone). Par gun sirf Modi sahib ne dekhe (my qualities were valued only by PM Modi).”
“After what happened with me in 2009 and then in the Congress, I was sad. I had lost 25-kg weight. The day I joined the BJP, PM Modi told me, “Weight bahut kam ho gaya hai apka. Koi nahi hum badha denge (your weight has reduced , don’t worry we will increase it),” Hans said.
In 2009, Hans unsuccessfully contested the parliamentary polls from Jalandhar against Congress leader Mohinder Singh Kaypee, losing by a margin of over 36,355 votes. Later, denied the 2014 Lok Sabha ticket in Jalandhar by the SAD, a disappointed Hans quit the party.
After getting the BJP ticket, Hans was seen in an active campaign as he sung paeans to Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a ‘Modi Modi’ twist to his popular song ‘tote tote’. Speaking of his Delhi plans, he said, “I am planning to work hard for the people on the promises I made. After the oath-taking ceremony on May 30, I will also visit Jalandhar.”
