The Indian eves took a sweet revenge against the Japanese side in the Asian Games 2014 as they defeated them by 2-1 at the Seonhak Hockey Stadium here on Wednesday. With this win, they not only won the bronze medal match but also avenged their last Asiad defeat in 2010 Guangzhou Games when they had lost to same opponents in the bronze medal match four years back. Japan had defeated them in extra time in Guangzhou but today in Incheon, the Indian eves kept the match well in control right throughout the match. This is the third bronze medal won by the women’s team after Qatar, Guangzhou and Incheon.
The opening goal was scored by India’s Jaspreet Kaur in the 23rd minute when she converted the penalty corner to give India 1-0 lead till the end of second quarter. But in the third quarter Japan’s scored the eqaulizer in the 45th minute to level the match but India’s vandana Kataria had other ideas as she immidiately followed it with quick goal in the 46th minute to hand India the lead once again. Several penalty corners and free hits were seen but India maintained its determination of net letting the match and medal slip away. And with the final whistle blown, it was all smiles for the Indian girls.
In the women’s hockey final, hosts South Korea will take on China for the title clash later in the day.
